Our [checklist](/guides/how-to-choose-a-hardware-wallet) walks through each point. ## A note on claims Phrases like “the safest” are the maker's marketing, not an independent security audit. Read the maker's security documentation and independent reviews before you decide. ## Frequently asked questions **Is Trezor or Ledger better?** Neither is universally better. They differ in design, supported assets, software and company. Compare what each supports and how you want to use it; see the checklist. **Are hardware wallets safe?** They keep private keys offline, which removes many online attack routes, but you still must protect your recovery phrase and buy from official sources. ## Sources - [BitBox – official site](https://bitbox.swiss) - [Ledger – official site](https://www.ledger.com) - [Trezor – official site](https://trezor.io) --- # How to choose a hardware wallet: a buyer's checklist Choosing a hardware wallet is mostly about matching it to what you hold and how you will use it – and avoiding scams. Work through these points before buying. ## Checklist - **Supported assets.** Confirm the wallet supports every coin and token you hold, on the maker's official support page. - **Official store only.** Buy from the maker's own store or a reseller it names. Avoid marketplaces and second-hand devices. - **Recovery.** Understand the recovery phrase (seed) process and whether you can add a passphrase. - **Open source and audits.** Check which parts of the firmware and software are open source and whether there are public security reviews. - **Connectivity.** USB, Bluetooth or NFC: choose what fits your phone and computer – and think about whether you want wireless at all. - **Display and usability.** You must be able to verify addresses on the device screen. - **Total cost.** Check today's device price and shipping at the official store, including VAT and customs if you are outside the EU. - **Support and updates.** Look at how long the maker has supported devices and how firmware updates work. ## Compare the makers See [BitBox, Ledger and Trezor side by side](/guides/best-hardware-wallets-2026). ## Frequently asked questions **Do I need a hardware wallet?** If you hold more crypto than you can afford to lose and want to self-custody, a hardware wallet is a common choice. It is not investment advice; self-custody also brings responsibility for your recovery phrase. --- # Hardware wallet security basics A hardware wallet only helps if you use it carefully. These are general good practices, not a guarantee of safety. ## Protect the recovery phrase - Write it on paper or metal, never in a photo, cloud note or password manager. - Never type it into a website, app or chat – real wallets only ask on the device itself. - Store backups in separate secure places; consider who could find them. - Nobody from support will ever ask for it. ## Avoid fake devices and phishing - Buy only from the official store; check the packaging and initialise the device yourself. - Be careful with search ads and links in e-mails or social media – type the official address yourself. - Verify every address and amount on the device screen before approving. ## Test your recovery Before you move significant funds, send a small amount, then practise restoring from your recovery phrase on a spare or reset device so you know the process works. ## Taxes Moving coins between your own wallets is not normally a sale, but selling or swapping is. Swedish residents can read our guide on [declaring crypto (K4)](https://kryptoskatt-k4.vercel.app/guides/deklarera-krypto-k4) (in Swedish). ## Frequently asked questions **What if I lose my hardware wallet?** If you have your recovery phrase you can restore your funds on a new device. Without it, funds cannot be recovered – which is why backups matter. --- # Frequently asked questions **What is a hardware wallet?** A hardware wallet is a small device that stores the private keys for your crypto offline and signs transactions on the device, so the keys are not exposed to your computer or phone. **Where should I buy a hardware wallet?** Only from the maker's official store (trezor.io, ledger.com, bitbox.swiss) or an authorised reseller the maker names. Never buy a pre-owned device or one whose packaging looks tampered with. **Should I ever type my recovery phrase into a website or app?** No. Legitimate wallets only ask you to enter or confirm your recovery phrase on the device itself during setup or recovery. Anyone asking for it online is trying to steal your funds. **Is this site affiliated with Trezor, Ledger or BitBox?** No. It is an independent directory. Some links are sponsored, which does not change what we write about the makers. **Which hardware wallet is best?** It depends on the coins you hold, how you want to use it and your budget. We list makers alphabetically and quote their own descriptions instead of ranking them. See the checklist (/guides/how-to-choose-a-hardware-wallet). **Can AI agents use this directory?** Yes: a free MCP server at /api/mcp, a JSON API and llms.txt. See For AI agents (/for-agents).
